New activity finder powered by open data helps Newcastle’s residents stay active

Newcastle City Council recently launched its brand new Active Newcastle activity finder. The search tool is powered by imin and enables people to find activities across the North East.

The activity finder was built by Kinetic Insight, an organisation listed on active//choice that prides itself on creating innovative and industry leading products across the sector. Their efficient design intuitively showcases activities from a number of providers across Newcastle and the surrounding areas, including British Cycling, England Athletics, GLL, GoodGym and the Lawn Tennis Association. Of the activity finder, Kate Montague, Business Development Coordinator at Newcastle City Council noted:

“Active Newcastle have adopted the open data software to improve the activity finder within the Active Newcastle website. The tool has allowed us to broaden the offer of activity across the city from a variety of providers giving the people of Newcastle more opportunity to find something for them.”

As open data is at the core of the product thanks to use of the imin Search API, it will be very easy for local providers to advertise their activities on the activity finder alongside regional and national organisations. To take advantage of this additional marketing opportunity, local providers need only use an “open” session management tool, a number of which can be found on the active//choice website.

If you are a city council or local authority interested in having your own activity finder, or an activity provider keen to understanding how and why to open your data, do please get in touch.
